Central Florida has been inhabited since prehistoric times when Paleo-Indians roamed the area. Over the years, various peoples settled here, culminating in the establishment of Gainesville by Europeans in 1854. In 1885, our historic property—The Magnolia Plantation—was constructed. Located in the historic heart of Gainesville, we invite you to set out on a journey to the past.
In this article, we will cover the best museums and educational destinations to complement your Gainesville getaway.
Opening hours:
To start at the beginning, venture to 3215 Hull Road, where you’ll find the majestic,
Florida Museum of Natural History. The exposition in
Powell Hall will take you through five periods, showcasing the development, flora, and fauna of the Florida peninsula. Remarkably, most of the fossils exhibited in the hall were found within less than 100 miles of Gainesville!
If you wish to learn about Florida’s recent history, the University of Florida stands as an institution of considerable tradition and quality. Today, up to twenty university buildings are protected by the National Register of Historic Places, with most of them built in the Collegiate Gothic style. You are welcome to take the tour through campus and experience its blend of historic architecture and modern feel for yourself.
Also known as Haile Homestead or Kanapha, Haile Plantation is a historic site and museum dating back to 1854. Its history began when Thomas Haile, his family, and 56 enslaved people moved from South Carolina to Alachua County, Florida. They established the 1500-acre Kanapaha Plantation, successfully growing Sea Island cotton.
The original plantation house stands and operates as a museum to this day, telling the history of the Haile family and the enslaved people. When you visit the homestead, make sure to view the "Talking Walls." These walls are known for bearing inscriptions by the Haile family members dating back to the 1850s!

If you wish to gain a comprehensive overview of Gainesville’s local history, we urge you to visit the
Matheson History Museum. Primarily known for the Historic Matheson House, dating back to 1867, the museum offers exhibitions on Florida history and Alachua County. Numerous events are hosted by the Matheson Museum throughout the year, so don’t hesitate to join and check back for information on seasonal events!
Micanopy, or “The Town that Time Forgot,” is known to be the oldest continually inhabited community in the interior of Florida. Due to its historical heritage and architecture, the downtown of Micanopy is protected by the US as part of the National Register of Historic Places.
If you choose to venture down to Micanopy, we recommend visiting the
Micanopy Historical Society Museum, which displays local history dating back to Native Americans. Beyond that, Micanopy’s old town is lined by 19th-century buildings, providing antiques, art, food, music, and hospitality to wandering tourists.
In addition to the sights and attractions already mentioned, many more historical destinations are scattered throughout Gainesville. For instance, the Cotton Club Museum and Cultural Center aims to preserve African American history and culture. Another spot is the A. Quinn Jones Museum and Cultural Center, honoring the memory of a local community leader.
