State Parks and National Forests

We are pleased to be centrally located among the most popular Florida parks and we're confident you’ll never run out of scenic escapes in Florida. Here's a few of our favorite spots located around Gainesville, FL.

Ocala National Forest

Known as Florida’s top destination for backpacking, the Ocala National Forest encompasses nearly 100 miles of the Florida Trail, which enters the park from three different locations. With over 600 lakes and rivers, the forest is frequented by those who enjoy fishing, swimming, boating, scuba diving, canoeing, and waterskiing.

  • Fishing: Bass fishing is a major draw in the Ocala National Forest, specifically in the free-flowing Ocklawaha. The subtropical waterways provide the setting for both bank fishing and fishing from watercraft. Lake George and Lake Kerr are known for being Florida’s top two lakes of lunkers.

  • Hiking: Segments of the Florida Trail as well as a dozen day hiking destinations receive a handful of hikers seeking a trek along wooded terrain in a scenic environment.

  • Wildlife Viewing: The Ocala hosts a lively scene of flora and fauna. Observe the best of Florida’s wildlife, as the park is home to the largest populations of Florida black bears, Florida scrub jays, red-cockaded woodpeckers, Sherman’s fox squirrel, and the Florida sand skink.

Devil’s Millhopper Geological State Park

The Devil’s Millhopper is a biodiverse bowl-shaped cavity that descends 120 feet deep into a small rainforest. The green plants and flowing water in the sinkhole make a hidden gem for a special outdoor adventure in North Florida.

  • Historic Site: The Devil’s Millhopper is a National Natural Landmark that has been drawing historians since the 1880s. Its historical value is all thanks to the fossilized remains of extinct animals that were discovered at the bottom of the sink.

  • Wildlife Viewing: The Devil’s Millhopper welcomes birdwatchers to the site, as some of its most common wildlife sightings are the birds of the pinelands and suburbs. Rabbits, squirrels, and an inhabitation of reptiles and amphibians occasionally make their appearance in the park as well.

  • Hiking: A half-mile nature trail along the rim of the sinkhole is designated for wildlife viewing and exploring the park. Visitors can also access the bottom of the Devil's Millhopper through a boardwalk system.

Fanning Springs State Park

Notable for its position along the Suwannee River, Fanning Springs State Park offers visitors an oasis for cooling down on a hot day. The site is characterized by oak trees and spacious areas for picnicking, grilling, and volleyball, among other similar pastimes.

  • Fishing: Multiple designated areas for Florida fishing dot Fanning Springs State Park. For information on these specific fishing areas, contact the park staff at (850) 488-4676.

  • Tours: Keep an eye out for the tours at Fanning Springs all year. These ranger-led programs are free with park admission. For additional details on these tours, contact the park at (352) 463-3420.

  • Scuba Diving: To complete your trip at Fanning Springs State Park, experience a close-up interaction with the aquatic wildlife of North Florida on a scuba excursion. Scuba divers must register for their scuba experience three hours in advance.

Sweetwater Wetlands Park

Over 125 acres of wetlands and ponds comprise Sweetwater Wetlands Park. Visitors are invited to walk along more than 3.5 miles of trails and boardwalks as part of their exploration experience in North Florida.

  • Wildlife viewing: Come see the beautiful birds and butterflies in the park. Don't forget your camera to take pictures of the wildlife you see.

We encourage everyone to exercise caution, however, due to the alligators that are known to roam the wetlands. As such, pets are not permitted. For more wildlife viewing, check out the Florida Museum of Natural History, located nearby!

  • Trails: The paths that meander throughout the park are meant solely for walking. Biking, horseback riding, and driving a motorized vehicle are prohibited on these routes.
